October 1st has come and gone and by now all letting agents managing properties in Scotland should have applied to the Scottish Government to join the Letting Agent Register. We at the property store were one of the first agents to apply in Scotland and the first of agents in East Kilbride to receive our letting agent registration number (1804002)
So far, the Government have received 775 applications, approximately 900 below the Government’s expected figures, and out of these only 117 have been issued with a Letting Agent Registration Number. While late applications continue to be submitted the final total is still expected to be nowhere near the numbers forecast.
The Government is now working on identifying agents that haven’t submitted an application in line with their monitoring and compliance framework.
Agents that have started an online application will receive a reminder that the deadline has now passed with encouragement to finish their application as soon as possible.
For any agents that remain unregistered, compliance letters have being issued containing a blunt warning that formal action will be taken if they continue to carry out letting agency work, without applying to the register, as they are currently committing a criminal offence, so all landlords please be aware!
