Do you ever feel slightly overwhelmed by having to deck the halls for Christmas? Is it a chore rather than a bit of fun? Why not scale back on your holiday decor (while still creating a gorgeous, festive space)? We have some beautiful inspiration which takes a more minimalist approach.
Remember; minimalism doesn’t mean having no decor at all; it means having less, more quality decor! Minimalism is all about owning only what adds value and meaning to your life and removing the rest. It's about removing the clutter and using your time and energy for the things that remain.
- Go Bare
Christmas trees don’t have to be crammed full with every hand me down bauble. Get creative, stick to a theme, and focus on the essentials.
- Focus on the Fireplace
If you have a fireplace, here is some beautiful inspiration to dress it with some garlands. Alternatively get outside and find some beautiful greenery to decorate throughout your home.
- Wreaths/Natural Centrepieces
Consider what you usually see in a holiday wreath: glassy baubles, twisting, ribbon, a fake dusting of snow, plastic snowflakes, twinkling lights, and a huge bow. These wreaths are a more minimal, natural route with some extra added greenery. A sustainable tip is using old Christmas trees to make a diy wreath. A great way to spend quality time with friends or family by spending a night making diy wreaths!
- Branches, Branches & more Branches!
Any flat surface is ripe for being accented with a garland or greenery. Add foraged branches and pinecones to a shelf in the bathroom, or turn to your bookcases, mantel, sideboard, and side table as spots to add a little holiday cheer.
- Try a modern twist for your advent calendars
There are many ways to DIY an advent calendar. To create your own, use clothespins to attach small drawstring bags to pieces of ribbon or string tied to a branch. Fill with sweets, magnets, mini decorations, and anything else small and fun you can think of.
- Replace, don’t add
Instead of cluttering your space up by adding all your Christmas decorations to your existing décor, try to replace items so you can stick to your minimal theme.
- Neutral Colours
An easy way to stay minimalistic with Christmas decorations is to use neutral colours. There is no need to overwhelm your space with bright red or tartan because it is considered “Christmassy”. Try sticking to whites, creams, browns, and greens.
- Head outside for free décor
Who needs mini artificial trees when you can get a cut of a real one? This gorgeous holiday dining room use winter greenery and candles to set a cosy mood. Besides adding a tiny tree cutting, you can add foraged greenery, holy to a floral hoop with wire, and smaller cuttings to vases on the table. Add flowers (grown or store-bought) to elevate the look.
- Wrap your presents with plain brown paper & string
Once you've got the minimalist Christmas tree down, it's time to focus on what goes underneath. This simple paper wrapping just needs twine and a bit of greenery to make it almost too pretty to open. A bonus is that it’s better for the environment too! Step it up a level by adding in an origami star and dried orange slice.
